Continuing my non-scary, Halloween viewing even after the holiday, I’ve watched Nightbooks. This is not a scary movie by any measure, so it’s right up my alley with a very benign evil witch, a cute magical cat, and two children as heroes. I did not go in expecting much crochet and I was not surprised. Because I like to focus on crocheted clothing, I’m only going to talk about the clothing; however, if fillet crochet is your thing, it’s there in the witch’s apartment, so give it a watch.
There is only one possible crocheted garment in this movie and it is worn by Yasmin.
Could this actually be knitting? It could be. Could you do it in crochet? You absolutely could. The chunky open stitches best seen on the sleeves would be really easy to do with crossed double crochets, and it would very much look like the stitches we see in the sweater. Because the stitch pattern is so open, it would drape nicely as we see in this sweater. I think another tell that this is crochet is the way the open front edges hang. They are a little bit stiffer than I think you would get with knitting. Luscious, liquid drape is harder to achieve with crochet and even harder to achieve with a thick yarn. This is crochet’s little tell and we see it here. The other crochet tell are the ties we see in the front. I’m pretty sure that’s just a line of chain stitches. Based on these clues, I think this is a crocheted sweater.
The other bit of clothing that caught my eye was this shirt of Yasmin’s. It is not crochet, but it could be. I can totally see this done in Irish crochet. It would be a beautiful shirt with tiny crocheted motifs joined with a thin crochet netting. In the crochet renaissance we seem to be having right now, I hope this sort of crochet work returns. It would be so time consuming and fussy, but it would be unquestionably beautiful.
And that’s Nightbooks. There was one (possible) crocheted sweater and it didn’t have much screen time. Regardless, I had fun spotting it and thinking about its construction. If you’ve spotted some possible crocheted clothing in a television show or movie, drop a comment and I will check it out.
