Some books stay on my shelves because they are calming and happy and make me feel like being a creative on my own path is a fine thing to be. Creature by Shaun Tan is that book for me. It’s a retrospective look at Tan’s work over the course of his career so far. There are images from his published works and images that have not been seen in other publications. It is sheerly delightful. Tan’s creativity blossoms on every page and makes me want to go and be creative too. It’s a permission slip to pick up the little things that drive your art and dance them through your creative process without worrying about how they will be received.
Blossom eater
If you just want to look at Tan’s work, you can make yourself a nice cup of something and flip through the book, just appreciating his art. If you want to learn more, Tan has included an image by image discussion of his works. You don’t need to read them to appreciate his work, but you will be inspired by his process and his passion if you do.
Telling you everything
I’m including a few images to, hopefully, inspire you. If you want a copy of this book for yourself, it’s still in print, and, surprise, available at libraries all over the place.
