Crochet ideas and inspiration for the independent crafter

A finished project and a new pet

It has been a week of minor and major joys here! Let us begin with the little things.

First, I finished a project! Adia’s mini-shawl is done just in time for the warm weather, so if we have a freak May cool down with sudden blizzard, she is all set. I even took pretty-ish pictures, see?

So what’s going on here? I used a double crochet together stitch row paired with a row of singles between. I increased on the double crochet together rows until I reached the middle, worked two stripes without any increases, and then decreased back to the 13 stitches I started with. The stitch pattern makes a solid but still very drapey fabric.

I measured, carefully, the yarn I had so I could use half of it for the increase side and half for the decrease side. I will swear until I die that the scale has something terminally wrong with it. I could have worked a few more rows with the yarn I have left over. I have two little balls of yarn now that aren’t really enough to do anything with besides demonstrate my inability to weigh yarn. Happy day to have such an indicator. Go me.

To celebrate finishing, I started a sweater. It’s going well. You might remember the cowl/swatch I made a while ago. Well, I’m using it now. Everything is going swimmingly, so I am probably days from finding out I didn’t carry some insignificant but highly relevant number in my sweater math and end up having to frog the entire thing. The joys of math just go on and on.

The sweater, like the cowl, is going to be worked mostly in moss stitch with Marguerite stitch collar, hem, and cuffs. I’m doing a staggered start to the neckline so it fits nicely without chocking Adia. I have yet to decide if I am going to turn the rounds after I finish that bit. I know I should because it will look best. I would like to say that I will, but I am difficult. I probably will, but I’ll grumble about it. A bunch. Grumbling can be cathartic.

Hannah’s projects continue. There’s not much new to report there. Soon, if things go well, I will start the border for Hannah’s rectangular wrap. By soon, I mean about 400 yards of lace weight yarn from now, so a bit. A bit.

But the biggest and most wonderful news from my week is Lady Josephina Spotsford! Yes! We got a new cat. She is perfection. Unlike the dog who was in my house last week who managed to pee on every rug he found, she uses her litter box as all proper cats do. She warmed up to all of us super quickly and is overjoyed to see any of us enter a room. She has the tiniest little meow, enjoys watching birds, and has stolen everyone’s heart. Gigi has not met her yet. We shall see how that goes in a month or so. It’s smell introduction time for now.

May the little joys of our lives remind us that even evil things shall freaking pass, and we can rebuild when they do. Wishing many joys in the week ahead!
